“Hear” the Audi R10 Diesel

Just got back from the Petit Le Mans at Road Atlanta. I made a few sound recordings of the cars, including the diesel powered Audi R10. If you haven’t heard the Audi R10, it’s because you can’t hear it. It is incredibly quiet, you mostly just hear the rushing of air going across it when it goes by.

Below is a recording of first the #1 and #2 Audi’s and then a couple of Porsche RS Spyders. Crank up the volume on your computer and listen to the difference.

  • Wow! I’m not sure if I like the quiet authority of the Audis or the defiant bark of the Porsche better. Of course, only one makes the hair on the back of my neck stand up ;-)

  • Oh, I like the beefy sound of a v-8, especially say the Corvette C06R or the old Panoz LMP cars too, but these Audi’s are nothing like anything I have ever heard before. There are nothing like what we are used to as far as a diesel.

  • That sound, or lack thereof, totally blew my mind when we were at Mosport last year for the ALMS race!

At first it was disconcerting, a race car should scream or roar past you, ya know? But over the course of the weekend I decided I liked it… but only for the Audi’s. If all the cars sounded like that I think half the excitement of the race would be lost!

  • Heard the R10 at Lime Rock last summer…the diesel is just eerily quiet. To me it is like when my favor racing boats - unlimited hydroplanes - went from the WWII era Rolls-Royce piston-driven Griffin engines to Bell helicopter turbines. Just a whisper.
